The Cognitive Benefits of Painting: Unlocking Your Mind's Full Potential

In a world where productivity and efficiency are often seen as the ultimate goals, we sometimes overlook the power of creative pursuits—like painting—that profoundly nourish our minds. While painting is typically viewed as an artistic hobby or form of self-expression, it offers far more than just a way to spend free time. The repeated practice of painting provides significant cognitive benefits that enhance brain function, improve emotional well-being, and promote mental agility.

A little bit about your new teacher.

Hi there! Briget here.

I am an artist, educator, and mountain girl with a city flavor.

Art making is connected to childlike play, so I’m taking this story back to early life. We won’t stay there long, promise! Born and bred in Colorado (think dirt roads, snowboards, and early-life bear encounters) I’d spend my days teaching my brother’s army men how to accept defeat, covering anything in glitter, painting things as I saw them and making installation art out of whatever I could get my hands on. Sorry I’m not sorry.

All of that pent-up creative energy was properly channeled somewhere in Nebraska. I was being classically trained in drawing, painting, and sculpture at Hastings College. My thesis included encaustic low-relief sculptures and a 13 foot oil painting. With my diploma near in hand, I joined a two-person curatorial team at the InterDisciplinary Experimental Arts Program at Colorado College where I built a preparators internship program, teaching college students about the structural aspects of installing art shows. We installed it all, hand sized Rembrant etchings to multimedia video projections.

In 2017, I left Colorado to travel west around the world to see renowned museums and galleries.

I ended up in an artist residency near the Cliffs of Moher, Ire where I realized that institutional museum work wasn’t for me. Instead I learned that I am here to translate experience through my specific lens, and help others do the same.

This realization brought me to DC, where I found Femme Fatale DC (you can find one of my murals in the shop). The store moved to Cleveland Park, and so did I.

I’m here for you: ready to teach you how to paint – to support you with the technical skill development you require to transform your life experience into works of art. www.briget-heidmous.com
