Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Lightning Speak by Ravin Chacon, Exhibition at The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College. 2017

Lightning Speak by Raven Chacon features multiple sound and video installations, field recordings and associated images, documentary footage of multiple performances, and community-centric performances of Drum Grid.

This extensive and technical installation was made possible by the diligent work of Jonathan Dankenbring and Naomi Van der Lande. Presented by The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College. Curated by Jessica Hunter-Larsen. Coordinating Curator, Project Manager, and Designer, Briget Heidmous.

Raven Chacon is a composer of chamber music, a performer of experimental noise music, an educator, and an installation artist. His exhibition Lightning Speak features both solo and collaborative work. Originally from the Navajo Nation, he is also a member of the Indigenous art collective Postcommodity, a team of conceptually-driven artists who challenge limiting and market-driven notions of Native American Art. Chacon’s diverse practice, which ranges from sculptural sound installations, to site-specific performance and collaborative projects, resists pigeonholing of art, music and social experience into distinct categories. Raven Chacon is the first Mellon Foundation Artist in Residence for the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College.

Exhibition documentation by Briget Heidmous at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College.

Please be advised that the artwork in this exhibition contains images and sounds of firearms.

A Very Long Line by Postcommodity is a four-channel projection and booming sound installation. Featured in the Whitney Biennale, 2017.

Chacon left Postcommodity 2018 after completing a final project with the collective at the Carnegie Museum of Art, exhibited as part of Carnegie International, 57th Edition.
