Social Action + ASTRAL THEORY

In Washington DC, writer and organizer, Mayra Y. Mejia, hosts gatherings and events that claim space for Fat Liberation. Her organization is called PLUSH DMV, PLUSH for short.

In social and environmental actions, PLUSH hosts plus-size clothing swaps in DC.

At the most recent event, hosted at Femme Fatale DC - Briget Heidmous talked with District Frays, Farrah Skeiky about designing ASTRAL THEORY.

Some context: Briget was a multi-sport athlete and a big girl all her life. From competitive sports swimming, soccer, and lacrosse to extreme sports and leisure activities in Colorado - everything in her size was black, boring, and boxy. ASTRAL THEORY is a direct energetic and political action.

Skeiky quotes Briget in their photo essay for District Fray:

Briget Heidmous, Creative Entrepreneur

“When I was in high school, there wasn’t activewear I could get that was made for my body, or that was accentuating my shape and not trying to form me into something else. So that’s where [my] Astral Theory clothing line comes from. It’s about creating body and color confidence in spaces where thinness is the priority. The whole concept is to be more active and confident.”
